Better Choice

The word Internet addiction sounds very serious, and obviously most of us are not addicted to it. However, if we miss something better because of spending too much time on it, we get the same result. One day when I went to the BYU Hitlist website, it was closed and said, "It's Sunday. Visit Your Grandma." I remember I felt ashamed of surfing the Internet instead of doing more valuable things for my family on the Sabbath day. I know serving families is the most important and rewarding job since I grew up in the LDS church. However, everybody does not know that. It is really tempting to use the Internet because it is fun and we now can do it anywhere and anytime on our mobile devices. We are responsible for teaching our future generations priorities so that they will be able to know how to be happy and will not need to go to the internet fasting camps

  1. It really is easy to get sucked in. Having to check your email 3,4,5 times a day. Constantly going back to the same websites just to see nothing has changed. While the internet can be such a blessing and give us so much information at the touch of a button, it can just as easily suck us in. The information we gain is worthless if we do not put it to use.

  2. Jared, I agree. I also feel like we could spend that addictive social media time doing things that are worthwhile, even if they do involve the internet. Use search engines to learn new every day life skills and then practice them. There are so many ways we could utilize the internet to be more productive individuals.

  3. It's remarkable how much time I can waste online if I put my mind to it. Very important to fill that time with constructive activities instead.

  4. I find it really fascinating that that article used the term internet "fasting", since I've actually put myself on what I termed recreational internet fasts a couple times. The fasts were really good experiences, too - I recommend it to anyone who feels like this is a problem for them. Though you'll want to do it on your own terms - I don't think I would have gotten nearly as much out of it if someone else was making me do it.
