More Free Time?
It may seem like we have more free time than our ancestors did because of the benefits derived from modern technology. I believe that most modern technology inventions are intended for saving time, but the more modern technology saves time, the more and more quickly you are expected to do your tasks. For example, if you can send emails from your mobile phone, it will save time because you do not need to sit in front of a computer. However, people will want you to respond to their emails faster and more often if they know that you check your emails on your phone. Technology helps you do more but does not help you have more free time.

I've never thought about this before, but it's completely true. Thanks for the insight.

ReplyDeleteApplications programming is a race between software engineers, who strive to produce idiot-proof programs, and the universe which strives to produce bigger idiots. So far the Universe is winning.

Replace "idiot-proof" with "time-saving" and "idiots" with "demands".
You make a good point Nozomi. I like to read old articles about what people thought the future would be like, and often they proclaim that in the future, people will have more free leisure time. But it hasn't ended up that way. Like you said, as technology has allowed tasks to be completed more quickly, people have been expected to fill up their time with more tasks instead of relaxing more.
